I was born in 1965 in Buffalo, New York. The summer of 1978 brought with it a challenging cross-country move. My father's job uprooted us to Encinitas, California, where I entered eighth grade friendless and very homesick. Writing always soothed me, from penning a poem as a kindergartener about my cat that was published in the Kenmore Union School District's anthology, through stacks of journals that no one but me will ever read, to the adult fiction that offers me a vicarious life via outrageous characters. Somewhere along my writing journey came lyrical picture book texts that provide a space for sacred sessions of parents reading to their little ones long before they can read for themselves. As a parent, I know firsthand the magnitude of the exceptionally precious bonds we create with our children in their earliest years. They are moments that go by quickly, but also last a lifetime. I'm honored to be the crafter of "read it to me again" words that act as the mere backdrop for the important center stage work of nurturing the literacy of a young mind. Across genres, and for countless reasons, writing is powerful. That's why I write.
